Boarding School in the UK Explained

Going to a boarding school in the UK may seem daunting, but once you know the structure, schedule, benefits and have the right support, it could be one of the best decisions you make for your child's future.

UK school year groups

The UK school curriculum consists of primary and secondary school, teaching children from age three to 16, however boarding schools focus on children from ages 11 through to 17. By the end of each summer term, the school writes a report of your child’s progress.

There are several compulsory national curriculum subjects in Key Stage 3, however, at Key Stages 4 and 5, students can choose from a selection of foundation subjects and electives. The core subjects remain English, maths and science throughout.

Boarding school schedule in the UK

Every boarding school has its own schedule for its students, from sunrise to sunset, but they all share the foundation of a healthy combination of academics and leisure time.

Benefits of boarding school in the UK

There are several benefits of attending a British boarding school as an international student. Aside from the personal attention and support from teachers and staff that students receive, they develop a sense of independence which translates into a smoother transition from school to university. On top of this, boarders are more likely to enter top universities in the UK as a result.

Safeguarding for international boarding school students in the UK

Despite the benefits of attending a boarding school in the UK as an international student, it can pose its own set of challenges for both parent and child. Not only are they in a different country, but children may not have friends or family in the UK to help guide them through the most informative stages of their lives. This is where LLE’s AEGIS accredited safeguarding comes in. On top of round the clock support throughout boarding, LLE’s guardianship team is now equipped to help with all COVID-19 related matters, from testing, to travel, to quarantining on arrival to ensure the safety of your child and health needs.
